Understanding UPF 50+ Sun Protection
What does UPF Stand For?
UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It is the standard rating system used to measure the effectiveness of sun-protective fabrics. Wearing a certified UPF 50+ hat brings many advantages for outdoor activities.
Why should I wear a UPF 50+ hat?
While standard clothing provides a baseline level of shade, it does not necessarily block all of the sun's rays, allowing a surprising amount of UV light to pass through the fabric to your skin, even on overcast days.
Investing in a proper UPF 50+ hat makes can make a big difference for a few simple reasons:
- Excellent Defence: A UPF 50+ rating means the fabric only allows 2% of the sun’s rays to pass through. In simple terms, it blocks 98% of both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.
- It Doesn't Wear Off: Sunscreen alone breaks down over time, needs reapplying every few hours, and easily washes away when you sweat. A UPF hat gives you continuous, reliable protection to covered areas that lasts as long as you are outside.
- Fills in the Gaps: It can easily protect the areas we often forget to put sunscreen on, like the scalp, the tops of the ears, and the back of the neck.
Which lining material is best for me?
The inside of your hat matters just as much as the outside. We use two different premium linings depending on how you like to spend your time outdoors. Here is how to choose the right one for you:
Cotton Twill Lining
Cotton twill is a classic, durable fabric with a subtle diagonal weave.
- The Benefits: It is highly breathable, absorbs moisture well, and feels soft yet sturdy.
- Best For: Active days out. If you love hiking, gardening, or any activity where you might work up a sweat, cotton twill will keep you cool, dry, and comfortable. It also has a bit of grip, so your hat stays securely in place while you move.
Polyester Satin Lining
Polyester satin is a beautifully smooth, silky fabric that prioritizes comfort and care.
-
- The Benefits: Because it is so slick, it creates almost zero friction. This means it won't mess up your hair or cause static. It also won't absorb the natural oils from your hair and skin, keeping things hydrated.
- Best For: Anyone with a sensitive scalp, delicate hair, or for more relaxed outdoor pursuits where ultimate comfort is the goal.
